St. John Passion, with Schola Cantorum and Providence Baroque Orchestra

Experience the powerful and moving performance of Bach's St. John Passion by Schola Cantorum & Providence Baroque Orchestra live!

J.S. Bach's St. John Passion performed by Schola Cantorum & Providence Baroque Orchestra led by Daniel Lee with Andrew Bearden Brown as the Evangelist.

Bach’s Passions were written for the Good Friday Services of the two principal churches in Leipzig early in Bach’s tenure, and were revised and performed numerous times in Bach’s life. This collaborative concert brings together two of the favorite ensembles of Museum Concerts, and features the rising young Tenor, Andrew Bearden Brown who made his debut as Evangelist with these groups in 2020. The John Passion shows Bach at his most dramatic with introspective Arias alternating with stirring choral movements for the crowd scenes.

Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass

Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass

Boston Baroque presents one of Joseph Haydn’s greatest and most dramatic choral masterpieces—his Lord Nelson Mass, also known by its original title Missa in Angustiis (“Mass in Troubled Times”). Composed in 1798 during a period of political upheaval and uncertainty as Napoleon’s forces threatened Europe, this monumental mass reflects both the anxiety of the age and Haydn’s enduring belief in hope and triumph.

Written at a time when Haydn was at the height of his creative powers, the Lord Nelson Mass pairs soaring vocal lines with electrifying orchestral writing, including prominent parts for trumpets and timpani that give the work its bold, martial character. The nickname “Lord Nelson Mass” was added shortly after the Mass’s premiere when news of Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon reached Austria, forever linking this powerful music with the idea of victory and resilience.

Led by distinguished guest conductor Bernard Labadie, this performance features a stellar cast of vocal luminaries: soprano Lauren Snouffer, mezzo-soprano Alex Hetherington, tenor Andrew Haji, and bass-baritone Philippe Sly. With its radiant Gloria, fervent Credo, and dramatic Agnus Dei, Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis stands as one of the crowning achievements of the Classical sacred repertoire—an uplifting and thrilling musical journey that continues to resonate in both concert halls and hearts around the world.

Telemann's Don Quixotte in Magdeburg

Telemann's timeless one-act opera about the unexpected participation of the tragicomic couple Don Quixote and Sancho Panza at a wedding in a rural setting—which is ultimately happily averted—perfectly demonstrates that true comedy unfolds in the details and their high-quality execution. This begins with the subtle humor of Daniel Schiebeler's libretto (revised by Telemann for composition), which effortlessly interweaves Arcadian, bourgeois-moral, and Enlightenment elements, ultimately elevating wisdom not only to the status of superiority over wealth but to the highest virtue. A perfect setup, and perhaps a fountain of youth, for the compositionally mature 80-year-old Telemann—Schiebeler was just 20 when he wrote the libretto, only seven years older than Telemann's grandson, Georg Michael.

Worthy of the Highest Praise: Bembo and Vivaldi with Cappella Clausura

Are you familiar with the name “Antonia Bembo”? How about “Antonio Vivaldi”? I’d wager that you’re familiar with the latter but not the former - which is exactly the point.

Antonia Bembo was an Italian composer and singer of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The reason you haven’t heard of her isn’t because her music is underwhelming: Bembo’s talent actually took her from Italy to France, where she was employed by King Louis XIV as a composer and singer. Her music has been unduly neglected because of her gender; she is every bit as good as her male contemporaries, and we’re proving it by putting her music side-by-side with the Vivaldi Gloria - one of the classics of the choral repertoire - and letting you draw your own conclusions.

According to one etymology, the name “Antonia/o means “worthy of praise”. In this little-heard work by Antonia Bembo, you’ll hear that she’s just as praiseworthy as any Antonio.

Baroque Brilliance: Bach Motets in Concert with Crescendo Music

While not composed as a set, these six motets BWV 225- 230 are considered to be among the pinnacles of the choral repertoire. All were written for St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach was director of music. Four of the six were written for funeral services of prominent Leipzig citizens, and are scored for double chorus without instrumental accompaniment. Bach took the traditional motet and elevated it into a more ambitious, multi- movement choral concerto, expanding the boundaries of the genre. Beyond their technical brilliance these motets express a unique emotional and theological depth.

Bass Soloist in Mozart's Requiem

Bass Soloist in Mozart's Requiem

Mozart’s Requiem is a work of great drama and emotional depth. It features some of Mozart's most powerful and innovative choral writing, evoking a range of emotions from solemn and somber to gentle moments of comfort and peace. Adding to its enduring legacy are the circumstances of the work: it was commissioned by a "mysterious and anonymous stranger," but Mozart fell ill while composing the Requiem and died at age 35 before finishing the composition. He is said to have remarked on "feeling as if he were writing his own death music," a premonition which proved sadly true.

We will perform the version completed by his pupil, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Although there have been significant recompositions by modern musicologists, Süssmayr’s is the only completed performance version of the work contemporaneous to the composer.

A professional orchestra of 25 musicians will join the MWV Choral Society in presenting the Requiem. The orchestra, performing on original instruments of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, will also perform Mozart's 39th Symphony in E Flat Major, providing a rare chance locally to hear Mozart's music as it would have sounded in the composer's own time.
